Happy Human Rights Day!

On December 10th the world and Ecocompartimos with it celebrated International Human Rights Day! If you’ve checked out my previous blog (well, if you haven’t, please do so :) you know that I’m here as an ESC Volunteer. Apart from our main project we ought to have another, independent project of our choice. And I chose none other than Human Rights to be my topic! I know, it’s a top pick <3

I coupled my education with the pleasure of facilitating training and came up with the idea of doing training sessions on Human Rights for youngsters. Of course, Human Rights is an immense subject, which we study for years in university, but it is also absolutely essential one for raising good citizens and most importantly-good people! So, I decided to adapt the basics of Human Rights to make it informative, fun, interesting and comprehensible for my teenage participants.

My main objective was to raise their awareness about Human Rights. I wanted them to know what are the main rights and freedoms that they enjoy just because they are human. And that those rights should be equally respected and accessible for everyone. And that there are some mechanisms to protect your rights in case  they are violated. But trust me, my participants did not need much explanation, because they were already cool enough to have respect for other people and also, kind enough to come to my trainings on SATURDAY MORNING! Thank you guys, much appreciated!

Throughout several trainings we learned Human Rights that are prescribed in Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948 December 10th, their meaning and scope; about the violation of human rights; Government's responsibility towards each human being regarding protection of human rights; about ways of holding the state accountable in case the government or the state in whole does not fulfill their responsibilities. We also covered real case studies and one of them was from Georgia, my country. One question, what do you think happens when two equally important human rights come against each other? Sorry, but you would’ve known if you had a chance to be on our trainings :)))

My participants : Amelia, Teo, Arturo, Marta, Nidal and Gabriel, always showed their creativity and wittiness. We even did a moot court activity which was about a real case of conflicted human rights. They were divided into two groups and had to defend different parties involved in the case. They played their part perfectly and showed understanding of explained human rights, which made me really proud. It also made me very happy when I received some feedback on the sessions :

“Nidal: I think that the training that we have been doing was a good way to learn more about the human rights and at the same time , it was also good to improve our english speaking. So in my opinion, this trainings are the best!”

“Amelia: In these four sessions on human rights I have learned that we all have the right to life and to do so, we have a set of fundamental rights and freedoms for the enjoyment of human life in conditions of full dignity. We have participated in different activities that have made us see how valuable these human rights are for any human being”

Stay tuned, I’m still not going
